Overview    Back to top

The MMTA's International Minor Metals Conference is the biggest global event for the industry.

Bringing together the world’s minor metals and related industries, this is the key opportunity to discuss current and future trends.

The 2011 event will as ever combine an exceptional programme of presentations with fantastic networking opportunities, including the welcome reception and the gala dinner on May 5.

The theme for this event is "Meeting the demands of the clean-tech generation" and will focus on the full range of minor metals which are proving critical to the future development of sustainable technologies.

The conference programme will look at the new frontiers for minor metals and will include challenging, provocative and thoughtful presentations by industry leaders.

Metals covered in this event will include: Cobalt, Molybdenum, Rhenium, Magnesium, Lithium, Selenium, Indium, Tellurium, Cadmium, Rare Earth Metals, Rhodium, Silicon, Germanium, Gallium, Chromium, Silicon, Niobium, Tantalum and many more.

We are delighted to announce that the opening presentations on May 5 will be made by:

Dr Oliver Sacks, Professor of Neurology & Psychiatry, Columbia University Medical Ctr, Columbia University, New York & and the best-selling author of Uncle Tungsten, The Mind’s Eye, The Man Who Mistook His Wife For A Hat, and Awakenings

Dr Sacks was born in 1933 in London, England into a family of physicians and scientists (his mother was a surgeon and his father a general practitioner). He earned his medical degree at Oxford University (Queen’s College), and did residencies and fellowship work at Mt. Zion Hospital in San Francisco and at UCLA. Since 1965, he has lived in New York, where he is a practicing neurologist. In July of 2007, he was appointed Professor of Neurology and Psychiatry at Columbia University Medical Center, and he was also designated the university’s first Columbia University Artist.

In his book Uncle Tungsten, Dr Sacks invokes his childhood in wartime England and his early scientific fascination with light, matter and energy as a mystic might invoke the transformative symbolism of metals and salts. The “Uncle Tungsten” of the book’s title is Sacks’s Uncle Dave, who manufactured light bulbs with filaments of fine tungsten wire, and who first initiated Sacks into the mysteries of metals. For more information on Dr Sacks please visit http://www.oliversacks.com/

Dr Steve Duclos, Chief Scientist, General Electric Global Research Center, New York.

Dr Duclos manages GE's Material Sustainability Initiative, which addresses GE's risks in the availability and sustainability of the company's raw material supply. This includes the development of a broad-based element-by-element assessment of the company's material risks.

From 2000 to 2008 Dr Duclos managed the Optical Materials Laboratory, also at GE GRC. The laboratory is responsible for development of advanced materials for a broad spectrum of GE businesses, including its lighting and healthcare businesses. From 1994 to 2004, he served on the Executive Committee of the New York State Section of the American Physical Society.

Further information about the speakers and attendees will be found here shortly.
